You may be thinking: “I just want to get fit & healthy, why the heck are we talking about mindset?!?” Well guess what, in order to make the lasting changes that we want to see in our bodies, we must first work on our minds!
If you are like most people, when January rolled around you probably set yourself some goals for the New Year. Here we are now in the middle of February already and for many people, those goals have already been long abandoned accompanied by thoughts of “I knew I couldn’t do it” or “Here I go just like last time – I don’t know why I bother!” Sadly, our little inner voices can be our worst critics and biggest saboteurs! So, if you are wondering how you can ever make the lasting changes you are looking for when it comes to your health and wellness, then my answer for you is this – you WILL see the changes you are longing for if you first take the time to address your mindset. Whether your goal is to increase your energy, lose weight, or increase your physical strength, no matter what your desired outcome is, start by taking the time to reflect on your attitudes first. What are you thinking about yourself most of the time? Is your self-talk mostly positive or negative?
This is the very first place I like to start with a new client, having them reflect on their attitudes and beliefs and dialing in to that little voice. Sometimes we are fully aware of our negative self-talk but all too often, we are completely unaware until we sit with our thoughts and really reflect on this. If you are about to embark on a change, I strongly encourage you to take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on what story you have been telling yourself and then, think about what will be different this time. What is one habit that you can change starting today that will bring you one step closer to your goal?
Maybe there is something you are afraid to attempt because you haven’t succeeded at it in the past. Or maybe there is something new you want to try but you have been listing out all the reasons in your head why you shouldn’t even try. What is one mindset shift you can make that will begin to have a positive impact? Write down one positive statement you can use to remind yourself of why you want to get started and why this goal is important to you. Put it in a place you will see it often and then, when things get tough, reflect on it once again.
The most successful people in the world are the ones who have been able to overcome negative mindset and believe that they CAN. It does not mean that they have been without failures, in fact, because they are willing to repeatedly put themselves out there, they have probably experienced more failures than most. The difference is, they do not let a negative mindset allow them to believe they can’t. They simply pick themselves up and try again.
